The Sullen Earth

A light in the darkness, a flame burning the candle to its core existence of hot wax, many would see the waste of the candles as a reminiscence of its past state but out of destruction there is beauty. Out of chaos there is art and Layla Ebrahim knew exactly that. Born in 1969, this young South African girl was exposed to the bias system of the apartheid and demoralizing racism that had impacted her life and point of view of the world. In these early years of troubled times is where she was first introduced to a unique art form known as Wax painting by her mother and like most beginners she wasn’t very good at it but unlike most children of her age who would normally moved on to the television, she somehow had an attraction towards hot melting wax and the passion to mould them into a perspective imagery. This hobby of hers grew gradually as she spends her years travelling around the globe, and with new experiences of socializations of variety of cultures and traditions helps to carve her approach towards life in general along with adding flavour of experimentation of colours, techniques and mixing Medias which sequentially improved her skills with amazing quality.

The Beckoning Peaks

After receiving her BA degree with Psychology and English as majors (Post graduate degree in English literature, Post graduate: Honours in English Linguistics), she married and settled in Cape Town, South Africa and had two children. During this time the tension of the civil and political unrest of the country due to the years of Dutch and British Colonials is at its greatest climax as the words of the jailed Nelson Mandela echoed through the cries of the locals fighting for freedom and justice. Her hobby was then transformed to a platform of expression of words which are censored and unspoken. Out of the chaos of the streets she found an outlet of grounding force of beauty to speak of truth in the form of wax and oils. It became her therapeutic and liberating escape and allows herself to invent, explore and scream out loud from the oppression of the governments.

She then relocated to Saudi Arabia with family and lived there for 10 years, while there she manages to participate in 3 exhibitions allowing her art work to be heard, seen and understood the tragic but yet beautiful story she wishes to display in them. After a sad end to her marriage, she was forced to moved to Bahrain before finally made home in Malaysia with her kids. With all the troubles of life she faces through she still somehow manages to find beauty in all of these in the form of her arts. We at Minut Init are proud to be the home of the artworks of Layla Ebrahim’s chaotic beauty. We are proud to shed light to the candles of her arts.

1) What makes Wax painting different and unique compare to other paintings and Why should people concern about it?

Wax is simply a pleasure to work with. It's versatile, there's no need to wait for it to dry, it can be etched, scraped, sculptured and molded. It doesn't attract
fungus or mildew, colours don't fade and it can be buffed for a lustrous, high-gloss effect without varnish or sealant. It's also compatible with most mediums, except for acrylics, which tends to peel off at some point in time. The beauty of using wax is that each glide
of a hot tool is unpredictable. It's almost as though the wax has a mind of its own. The final effect looks almost as though the light is stealing its way through the painting
from beneath the surface of the wax, giving it a luminous and dreamy quality. Every time I look at a wax painting, mine or not, I see something new and wonderful.
Wax painting is one of the oldest forms of painting in the world, dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt, mostly used to decorate the walls of tombs. Still, it's
art, and subject to the eternal critic inside all of us. I have seen amazing wax paintings in Malaysia, in the form of Batik. The difference is that Batik uses the wax
for shape and form and then discards it. The wax can then be melted and reused, or you can do what I do - use it as paint.

2) What message are you trying to convey with your paintings?

I like sharing my love of nature and my tendency towards fantasy and fiction through my paintings. How remarkable would it be if someone finds some kind of pleasure
in that? Perhaps it may inspire in some tiny way. Maybe someone somewhere would sit up and think about something mundane or profound, or perhaps just find some kind of solace or refuge in one of my paintings. Then, I would consider myself an accomplished artist, even if nobody had ever heard of me!

3) Why did you decide to come to Malaysia?

I moved to Malaysia for a few reasons. I fell in love with it on a previous visit, and on further investigation, I discovered that it has excellent education and less crime
than my own country. Of course, moving to a new country with children is challenging, but we settled in quickly and found a comfort zone and nesting place in Kajang. As the future
is uncertain, this is home, for now, and will be, hopefully for a long time.

4) How would you describe your style?

When it comes to wax painting, I am rather absent-minded. I tend to let the wax do its thing and perform it's magic. I rarely focus too hard on what I'm doing. Wax is that way - the outcome
is unpredictable, and you have to go with the whole melted flow. Oil painting is another story. I tend to be less lackadaisical... less callous and brazen. I think about it, plot, plan, sketch, paint, and then think about it some more. I like doing this, mind you. My moods are thus catered for.

5) What do you expect from the Malaysian Audience and compare to the other countries you had been to?

I find the Malaysian people to be very crafty. ('Crafty' as in arts and crafts). They're creative, and remind me of my own country. In South Africa, people recycle everything. They could probably find a use for every possible thing new, used or discarded. I find the locals here to be just as innovative and talented, and open to new things. The locals of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia took kindly to my art, generally, and appreciate having had the opportunity to showcase my work there. I also had the opportunity to meet many amazing artists and learned a lot from them. As for the Malaysian audience, I am sure they're open to new things. I did initially find that exposing myself as an artist was an uphill battle, as a foreigner, but it didn't last long. The locals seem to be bursting with colour and vibrance and it explodes through their art. I wonder how they would take to my wax paintings. I know one thing for sure, though: even if they didn't like it, they would be too polite and and nice to tell me so. This is another reason I am here-the people are generally nice. However, People of Malaysia, I hope that you would give me the honour of having a small niche in your thriving, thrashing art scene. I think they will.

“As it is for most artists, I am inspired by my experiences and socialization. Growing up in South Africa during Apartheid and racism, being a mother and having had the good fortune of travelling to 37 countries have helped shape my perspective and attitudes towards others, and life in general.
I have always been fascinated by other cultures and their traditions. I find myself learning something new almost every day from others, in their progress towards self-expression and the eradication of inhibition. I thoroughly enjoy working with oils and wax. Wax is versatile and I love its texture and lucidity. Art is not just a pleasurable it is a portal into the roads less travelled by - so, I paint.”

As we celebrate an intensely cool weekend of Art For Grabs – Human Rights Day, brought to you by Amnesty International Malaysia and The Annexe Gallery, perhaps we can find a way to understand what human rights really are.

The art bazaar features the cute, the quirky and the crafty, everything under RM100 each, perfect for Christmas gifts or for yourself – it’s nice to be reminded that this country still has hope. Meanwhile, the fringe events offer a chance to be inspired by expression heroes, revolutionary artists, contemporary communes, radioactive filmmakers, protest singers and other human rights space travellers. Punk Rock Art Space…
Art galleries are often intimidating to the common but artistically-inclined folks, which is ironic considering it is the underclass that creates the most provocative art. Uptown Damansara’s little known Minut Init was conceived as an antithesis to the more opulent and proper galleries in town. Originally an office building, founder James renovated the space into what it is now – a place for art to be presented as it is, strip bare of any formalities. Unlike spacious galleries where empty space is almost obligatory, Minut Init makes full use of what little space it has by giving free rein to the artists over how they want to decorate the space. The gallery itself is as much of a canvas to the artists as the art pieces showcased. This makes for intimate exhibitions where patrons and artists are encouraged to mingle as opposed to the social detachment of regular expansive galleries.

CLIENTELE Talented DIY artists who haven’t had the opportunity to present their work to the public. As for the public themselves, art enthusiasts who fancy something a little more raw. Hipsters, nerds, punk rockers, and post-rockers who dabble in art (or pretend to at least).
ART STYLE Minut Init welcomes a whole range of artistic discipline; paintings, sculptures, drawing, sketches, photography arts, short films, music videos, animations, installations. If there’s one common thread among them, they’re mostly either post-modern or pop art.
ATMOSPHERE Punk rock-esque, like the smoky underground confined art spaces of the LA do-it-yourself art scene’s glory days.
DESIGN Amorphous bare spaces that fill up and change depending on the exhibition currently held. Divided into 6 rooms, 1 being a smoking room for art enthusiasts to chill out and ruminate over the piece they just saw.
DOOR POLICY Exhibitions are mostly free unless specified. You don’t have to look sartorial to enter. In case you haven’t realised by now, Minut Init is pretty hippie in their code of conduct.
OPEN Exhibitions date and time are as advertised and differ from one another.
PARKING It’s Uptown, we are pretty sure you’d know what that means. Usual MBPJ sideway parking spots and rates applies. Expect to double park

Before the age of the digital revolutions, there was FILM. In the modern era, everyone is a photographer, just snap and upload. The delicate and precise methods of Film Processing that requires specific skills has been underrated and soon will be forgotten. Or so they thought.A new breed of photographers brings you a combination of modern generation perspective using the medium of the old school historical film photography. Tahi Cicak Exhibition is a showcase of these style of photography, using the old and the new into one. The exhibition will comprise a group of photographer including:

In the early days of photography, photographers had no choice but to shoot in black and white, as it was the only available medium. Then, in 1936, the invention of kodachrome gave colour photography to the world. But black and white photography didn’t die off, instead it flourished. Modern black and white photography at it’s best is art, and many photographers regard it as the purest form of photography.

Dedicated to their artwork and the originality, they only capture the essence of life and they beauty in modern day lifestyle to express the truth and allows the viewers to open their eyes to the minuscules details of life. They will also provide a lesson from their experience to anyone eagerly wished to learn the methods of Film Processing.

MADE IN PHONES: Revisited

A couple of months ago, after attending one of many photography exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur, I realize and thought to myself wouldn’t it be cool to have a Mobile Photography-only exhibition? Looking at the increasing number of family portraits and travel photos taken with mobile/smart phones, I’m sure some of them are “gallery-worthy”. As camera phone technology advances (i.e. Nokia N8’s 12-megapixel camera) and the rising popularity of photo-sharing apps (i.e. Instagram) I wanted to see if they could match professional photography work at established galleries.

On June 18th, TinPix sent out calls for submission to friends who are fellow mobile photographers (later dubbed as ‘mophogs’) and people whose work we’ve been following, who later spread the news online. One month and over 40 entries later, 25 mophogs were chosen. Overwhelmed by their amazing work, they came from mixed backgrounds and professions; artist, lawyer, designer, student, accountant, restaurant owner, copywriter, activist, journalist, lecturer, system analyst along with professional photographers, musicians, filmmakers, even a magician.

On July 29th, ‘Made In Phones’ KL’s first mobile photography exhibition was held at MinutInit Gallery in Damansara Uptown. There were 378 work displayed from photos to digital artwork all shot, edited, manipulated on mobile phones. All printed work looked more vibrant presented in large-sized, photo paper. There were also 10 international short films and music videos screened at the event. By popularity the devices used were iPhone, HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, Blackberry and Sony Ericsson.

Wide range of subjects covered in their work; portrait, travel, nature, architecture, animal, concert, food, street and textures. Some of the more noticeable work are Danial Radzmi’s portrait of the late director Yasmin Ahmad taken a month before she passed away, Vini Balan’s signature ’Afoot Series’ of her foot in various travels, Prakash Daniel’s ’Batavia Series’ of Jakarta street photos, Aga Dhiyaulhaq’s amazing digital mobile photo manipulation artwork, Ili FM’s concert photos displayed as show tag/stage pass, Emmy award-winner Richard Koci Hernandez’s poetic Instagram prints, Nadia J Mahfix’s morbid black & white ‘Metamorphosis Series’, James W Griffiths’ Nokia 2011 short film award-winning ‘Splitscreen: A Love Story’ and Zam Nayan’s photo-a-day project ‘Projek: 2008ku’.

At the open day there were meet and greet the mophogs sessions, mobile photography talks by Prakash Daniel and Aga Dhiyaulhaq on history, current state of mobile photography, photo-taking tips and apps, before Q&A and engaging discussion with the attendees. Behance Malaysia joined the event and had their 4th creative group meetup that was lead by Muid Latif. Thanks to Public Pantry we were served delicious snacks and refreshments during the event.

All in all, the event was a humble success, with an estimate of 250 patrons attending the 3-day free event. Their reception and feedback were very encouraging, overwhelming support that fuelled TinPix to organize more such events in the future. 1.describe your gallery/artspace to us. tell us about your concept and perhaps future goals of the place

Minut init is a space where art is exhibited from paintings, sculptures, drawing/sketches/ photography arts, short films, music videos, animations,

installations and so on. The space that i had formerly or originally it was an office, i redesigned and renovated the space into a studio gallery.The concept of my space is to promote art as it is.

It have 5 rooms, 1 chillout smoking room. 1 big main exhibition room, two smaller rooms and a pantry.

Each room has different type of mood and ambience to it, There will be no discrimination of art and artworks,The art speaks for itself!

2. You did mention that is isn' to much a convetional gallery- tell us a bit more

Minut init galleria introduces a new concept or idea, different from the conventional gallery. A conventional gallery has a huge spacious environment.It has a formal setting and very spacious and officious And sometimes the number of the paintings and artist are quite few

It is a place where an empty space is prohibited. Means, all artist or art fethics can have theirs displayed. But minut init fully utilized every space in it,

The idea of this is ‘the wall Is the canvas itself. Minut init have 22 artists and 175 artwork in one small space.

3. How did the gallery/artspace start up? what's the origins story behind it?

I Studied Diploma in Visual Digital Art in Limkokwing.Then I further my studies in Melbourne, doing Bachelor of Fine arts in Deakin, Melb Australia.Ive stayed in Melbourne for 3 years, worked part time here and there and travel around Australia,Then I came back home to Malaysia for six month, But I didn’t manage to find a proper job that suited my line of studies and interest, so what happened was I chose to go to uk to worked and travelled for 2 years, Just to see the world,

Ive save up a some money and started this studio/galleria,

It has always been my ambition to own a gallery,

4. How do you determine the theme of exhibition?

This first Exhibition si called Minut init art exhibition,and Its an open theme, its up to the artist opinion, freedom of what to choose, Promote art as it is

5.What are your criteria in selcting artists?

Minut init invites any artist, This is the suprise part where minut init while aproach any artists who is interest to exhibit their works, Open to anybody who is really interested in exhibit their artworks and have the eye of art,

Bassically Minut init starts with as a stepping stone for new artist, and Minut Init will always changing ideas and keep evolving,

6. Would factors such as marketability, reputation be vital in your decision to pick artists?

I dont think it won't be vital, I think it will be the interest of the establish artist itself if they are willing to promote themself and show their artworks in this space i would love to have them, Minut init is still brand new and would like to grab any good oppurtanity.

7.how would you categorize/ describe your target audience?

If the theme is open topic and the target audience is anybody who saw the adverisement and interest to see what it is.

TinPix & Friends present- Made In Phones: A Mophog Group Exhibition

Greetings Mophogs*! We are TinPix, a community arts initiative based
in KL. We are putting together a friendly Mobile Photography exhibition
this July and we are inviting you to join us for this super rad event! It’s
time to put down your Leicas and Dianas and start shooting with your
iPhones, Androids, Berries what have you.

We see how good and cool you guys are via Flickr, Instagram, Tumblr,
etc. So why not print them for a fancy display at the exhibition? There
will also be a space for screenings, workshops and digital illustrations.
There is only one rule in this get-up: all must be made in phones!

It’s an open themed, free spirit kinda thing so you can display your work
anyway you like and as much as you want. We are also looking for
suitable Mophogs* for a talk on all things mobile photography, and short
video/film/docu for the screening. So get crazy excited and submit your
entries to us!

Currently, although we have a few artist who have submitted their artworks but we are still looking for more.
